Wedding budget breakdown percentages: what goes where

48 % of a United States wedding budget goes to the venue and to food and drink (20 % and 28 %), by the published table the calculator uses (WeddingWire Newlywed Report, "Wedding Budget Breakdown", percentages of the total, read 2026-09-19); the biggest lines are food and drink 28 %, venue 20 %, attire, hair and make-up 9 %. Below: every category as a percentage and as an amount of the average $34,000 wedding, how the UK and Australian tables differ, and what a $30,000 budget looks like split the same way.

What percentage of a wedding budget goes to each category?

The wedding budget calculator multiplies your total by a published share per category, so the split is the publisher’s survey, not a rule of ours. The table applies the United States shares to the average United States wedding, $34,000 for 117 guests (The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study, press release 2026-02-18, read 2026-09-19). Where the publisher gives two of our lines as one, the source text at the bottom says how it was split.

How does the breakdown differ in the UK, Canada and Australia?

Each country in the calculator has its own published table, and the lines are drawn differently. The venue is 20 % in the United States table, 23 % in the UK and 46 % in Australia, where the published figure is the reception venue alone and food and drink is a separate 10 %. No Canadian table of shares was found, so Canada starts from the United States table and its source says so. A 0 % line means the publisher did not report that category on its own, not that it costs nothing: the calculator lists those lines under the table and you add your quotes to the total.

What does a $30,000 wedding budget look like?

The same shares on a typed total of $30,000: $6,000 for the venue and $8,400 for food and drink lead the list. The per-guest column uses the average 117 guests; with 100 guests it would be $300 per guest overall, and the 100-guest guide shows what that headcount costs at the published averages.

Why do published breakdowns disagree?

Because each publisher surveys its own couples and draws its own lines: one counts the bar with the catering, another puts it in the venue package; one reports attire on its own, another folds hair and make-up into it; rings and the planner appear in some tables and not in others. A share is also an average across weddings of every size, so a small wedding with a top photographer, or a large one in a family garden, sits far from it. Treat the table as a first draft and check it against quotes line by line.

How to use the percentages on your own budget

Type your total in the budget calculator and it splits it by the shares of your country; type a guest count and the same figures appear per guest. As quotes come in, compare each with its line: a venue above its share means another line has to give, or the total grows. The food and drink per guest guide takes the biggest per-head line on its own, and the cost per guest calculator compares your total per guest with the national average. The result is a planning estimate, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of a wedding budget should go to the venue?
20 % in the United States table (WeddingWire Newlywed Report, "Wedding Budget Breakdown", percentages of the total, read 2026-09-19), 23 % in the UK table and 46 % in the Australian one, where the published figure is the reception venue alone. What a venue line includes (room only, or room with food and drink) is the first thing to check on a quote.
What percentage goes to food and drink?
28 % in the United States table, $9,520 of the average $34,000 wedding, and the line the guest count moves most. The food and drink guide turns it into an amount per guest for each country.
How much of the budget is photography and videography?
12 % together in the United States table: 6 % photography and 6 % videography, a split the source text explains (the publisher gives the two as one line). Skip the video and that share is yours to move to another line when you set your own budget.
How is a $30,000 wedding budget broken down?
With the United States shares: $6,000 for the venue, $8,400 for food and drink, $1,800 for photography, the rest as in the table above. For the average 117 guests that is $256 per guest; type your own guest count in the budget calculator to see yours.
Do the percentages add up to 100?
Yes: every table in the calculator sums to 100 % and the amounts always add up to your total (the maths normalises a table that rounds to 99 or 101 %). Where a publisher's table leaves a line out, that line starts at 0 % and the calculator lists it under the table so you add the quote to your total; where it lumps two of our lines together, the source text says how they were split.
Why is attire such a large share in the UK table?
Because the UK publisher reports wedding attire as its own line at 19 % (against 9 % in the United States table) and folds rings, stationery, cake, transport, favours, planner and ceremony into a single 6 % "other" line. Different publishers draw the lines differently, which is why the tables are shown with their sources rather than merged.
